Great Toy, but Now Everything is a Nail

Melissa and Doug nailed it again (pun intended) with this classic workbench toy. The quality is exactly what you’d expect from the brand—sturdy, well-designed, and built to withstand toddler enthusiasm. That said, owning this toy has introduced a new household game: “What Can I Bang On Today?” We now have regular conversations that go something like, “The hammer is for banging on the workbench, the hammer is for banging on nails, the hammer is not for banging on the walls.” (Pro tip: Check out the Best Behavior book series for tools to handle those fun chats—especially Hands Are Not for Hitting.)The screws are still a little challenging for my toddler, but he’s just under the recommended age, so I’m confident he’ll get there. In the meantime, I love how this toy encourages independent and creative play, all without requiring batteries or screens. It’s also a win for our goal to stick with less plastic in our toy collection. All in all, this is a fantastic, reasonably priced toy that keeps little hands busy (even if it means a few extra "hammer talks" along the way). Highly recommend for budding builders!

Quality Craftsmanship and Endless Play with Melissa & Doug Toolbox"

I recently purchased the Melissa & Doug Toolbox for my little one, and it has quickly become a favorite in our household. The craftsmanship of the toolbox is outstanding – sturdy wooden construction and attention to detail showcase the brand's commitment to quality. The realistic design adds an extra layer of excitement for young ones who love to mimic real-world scenarios. The variety of tools included is impressive, providing a well-rounded play experience. From a functional screwdriver to colorful nuts and bolts, it sparks creativity and imaginative play. What stands out the most is the educational aspect – my child is not only having fun but also developing essential fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.Melissa & Doug Toolbox is not just a toy; it's a tool for learning and exploration. I appreciate the durability and the educational value it brings to playtime.Highly recommended for parents seeking a well-made, engaging, and educational toy that fosters creativity and skill development. A fantastic addition to any child's playroom!

Motor skills toolkit

I bought this for my son who is a month shy of 2 and enjoys Bob the Builder and my tools. Even though he is not the recommended age, I thought he might begin investigating it, trying it out if it was around. The more he plays with it, the better he gets at learning to use the tools. He has loads of fun with daddy (or me) while they screw together the plates & hammer in the pegs. My son is thrilled that he has his own tools, so he now leaves mine alone. This is a wooden toy that will swell or shrink with humidity, so there are some days getting the pegs out is just a bit stickier, but in general we have no problem with the set. Because we play with him with this toy, he is supervised, but I can see how a child might get injured. My son goes from toy to toy every 10-15 mins, so I don't expect him to be captivated by anything for very long (kids aren't at this age), but he does play with this a bit longer than others. It challenges him to experiment. I like the old time toolkit design and that all the pieces fit inside. Keep in mind your child's personality, temperment, play style - supervised vs. unsupervised, patient or easily frustrated - and the likes of the child. My son, for the moment, enjoys this toolkit. I have bought a few toys I was certain he'd love, but he hasn't touched them since they day they came home (that doesn't mean the toys are defective, they just don't interest my son) - this one's a keeper.**Update a few years on, he's outgrown the toy but it served us very well indeed. The set held together through 4 years of play and provided much enjoyment and pretend building. He now has an erector set that provides for and encourages both designed objects (car, robot, ferris wheel...) and free form creative designing and building.

Perfect Toddler Toy!

Purchased this for my 2 1/2 y/o as an Easter gift as he’s been expressing interest in construction tools lately. I wanted something on the chunkier side since he’s still developing his fine motor skills but something that was still realistic enough to be usable and so that it would age well — this totally fit the bill! I’m always frustrated by toys that end up being too small for my kiddo, but this one is perfect, they don’t even feel too small in my hands. The screws/bolts are fully usable with both the screwdriver and the wrench, and all the pieces feel durable and work well. My only complaint is that the nails seem to be a little bit bigger than the screws so that they don’t fully fit through the holes, but I think that might be part of the design so that the toddlers are motivated to learn how to use the hammer to take the nails out? Either way, my little guy loves it and I’m looking forward to buying the tool bench in a year or so if his interest continues.
