Not a pretty picture, but neither was my first experience without any instructions.

What you see is my attempt to use my Mr. Pen set. I was looking forward to this set because I wanted to start working with mandalas. My only experience was high school geometry and that was limited to the usual cheap compass that came in a school supply set.The cute little mustache print and thank you included did not make up for the lack of instructions. It does say a professional set, so maybe I should have looked for a beginner set to learn the mechanics.I attempted on my own, but there were pieces included I simply didn't have a clue about. Again, I'm not a professional with a compass.I can't tell you how many times I had to chase that small screw when it flew off its pin. (I'm left handed and sometimes get righty-lefty backwards.) That pin is tiny. Be careful you don't lose it, or the screw head.I didn't understand the extender at all, so I turned to online videos. Mr. Pen does have a video, but it moves quickly. His hands are in the way sometimes. Not all the things in my box were addressed, so I still don't know what one thing is. I did manage to see enough on the video to figure out the extender. After I removed it, I realized the pen/pencil will slide back and forth on the extender to make different size circles along with screwing the compass wider or more narrow. I'm sure that will be a nice feature after I become more adept. While I was chasing those tiny screws, I saw the random marks on my paper you can see in the photo. I was trying to fit the pencil holder on the smaller compass to no avail. However, in that process, I noticed I made more marks. Well, what do you know? I discovered there's lead on one side for both compasses, you don't actually need a pencil unless you are doing the really big circles from the extender.Again, it could be my lack of experience, but some simple written instructions and photo showing parts would have been helpful and less frustrating. As it is advertised as a professional set, I don't have anything critical to say. I'm a professional artist, not architect. I'm imagine that made a difference in my experience. It seems sturdy enough, especially for how I will be using it.Eventually, I did figure most of the bits and pieces out. One thing included is supposed to be a screwdriver (from the video), but it looks like it has a blade and you need a tiny screw drive to turn it. I thought it was some sort of sharpener until I watched the video. I will have to watch again to figure out where and how to use it.The other thing I am clueless about. I can't tell you what it is because I don't have a name for it. It wasn't addressed in the video. It appears to attach somewhere to something. I'm sure, eventually, I will get it figured out.My experience with the set, may not be typical, but if you are a beginner using such tools as I am, I hope this review will give you advance idea of what you may be up against while setting it all up.As to the photo. I used a not so great photo because I thought it would give you an idea of the sizes you can make. You will see the random marks I referenced in my review. I just used a sheet of practice pad to make the circles. As I use my rulers for artwork, they are clear. I knew nothing would show up in the photo. What you see is a seam measure for sewing, but it has inches and metric on it. I made as small a circle as I could with the smaller compass and then as large as I could. The arcs off to the right side were made with larger compass, the extender and a pencil. I did not have the larger compass extended as far as it would go, but I did have the pencil extender at full length. I didn't have large enough paper at hand to complete the biggest circle, but you can get an idea of how large a circle this set can make. You can go from 1/2 inch diameter up to very large dinner plate sized circles that might be good for murals, signs etc.Again, I think this set will be good for my purpose after I get better at using it, but instructions would have been so helpful.

Great features, solid and awesome customer service

Update:I contacted the seller and his response was super fast and sorted out the problem right away. We now have a compass that works well and that one must have been a one off one that has a problem. My son loves it and the feature where you push both bottoms to expand it quickly is super useful when he is doing his geometry homework. That way, he doesn’t have waste time using the small dial to expand the leg or reduce the size.————-(Old review)I was excited to get this for my son for his Geometry class. So was he. All are great such as refills, extra screws, the little metal plate as a screw driver to tighten the screw for the leg that bends, additional leg to draw a big circle (although this isn't necessary for his class), but one slight oversight which is annoying to use is the screw that tightens the legs from bending. The screw head is so shallow, I cannot tighten it before threading the screw. Needless to say that I cannot tighten it. So, when my son uses it, it kept bending when he's putting his point down on the paper firmly so that the compass won't slip off. I told him to grab the bottom part of the leg while he is pushing down on it.Contemplating on returning it and see if we can get the proper one to tighten the legs. But the inconvenience of it... sigh... If they could just replace the screw (if that screw can be replaced), that would be perfect. All other features function fine and would have been a great compass with 5 stars.

Missing / broken pieces

The set looks good, but mine arrived with the larger compass missing one of the nuts that is used to tighten the compass point or lead. The screw for it was loose in the package, but no nut. Additionally, the lead in the small compass was broken and the small compass seemed to have an odd bend it in at the top (not a big deal, it still works but doesn't fit level in the case). I contacted "Mr. Pen" for replacement pieces and instead of offering to just send me the missing nut they told me to return the whole set. Uggghhhh.

i use this a lot, wish i had gotten it sooner

this is a real quality instrument with a beam to increase the working radius. you may need to watch a video on how to use this, i do not have one.with this, you can do home remodeling to scale (architect ruler needed), home yard improvement/landscaping and many other things.comes in a good case, and i would give this as a gift if i had any friends (who would use it)
