Perfect speech clarity and sensational music
If you hearing ain't what it used to be, the SB500 will be among the best investments you ever make. Even as a long-time and grateful user of other Zvox sound bars and headsets, I was surprised at the SB500's perfect speech clarity. We no longer need subtitles and the words are clear at volumes from low to high. Speech and song words are crystal clear even with heavy, complex music and sound effects. I've never been so impressed by any speakers or soundbar. This wonder of a system compares favorably with systems costing two or three times more. A+ from ZVOX. Y'all outdid yourselves this time.

Fantastic product, in a class of its own. Outperforms competitors 3x the price.
Because my wife has serious hearing loss, and I have some hearing loss, we have experimented with a number of mid to high priced soundbars in order to clarify TV dialogue. At the same time, since we are both musicians, excellent articulation of music is key pritority. ZVOX products are in a class of their own with respect to TV dialogue clarification, even as compared to competitors 3x the price. With an added bass unit, the SB500 Max also performs extremely extremely well for music; we also have a JBL 1300 at another location, and I would rate both "excellent," although they each have different strengths. With a number of equalization settings, ZVOX products can be tuned to the room and also to the individual needs of those for whom hearing loss is an issue (in other words, most of the population over 65). With a bit more tweaking it's getting better. Still not the low end of the 475.
Bought a ZVOX 475 about 18 years ago. It was an excellent speaker. Great base, excellent separation and imaging. Unfortunately it died do to my stupidity. This unit, SB500, doesn't come close to the sound qouality, base and imaging. The old unit had a throaty sound to voices where this one is thinner with little base. After patience and more tweaking the sound has improved. The need for an addiitional sub is on hold.It does do an excellent job on voices.

So good we bought another.
We've had an SB500 for over 5 years in our den and it has worked flawlessly. We liked it so much that my family went in together to get my Dad one for his TV. When we bought a new TV for our large, open concept living room, we knew we'd need a soundbar for it too and I looked briefly at what other companies had to offer but ultimately knew we'd probably get another Zvox. I looked at the SB500's bigger brother but, other than a larger profile, it didn't look like it offered anything additional electronics and driver-side so we bought another SB500. It looks and sounds great beneath our new 75" LG QNED85. I believe I've already reviewed our first SB500 but I'll say it again, the sound quality and output is soo much better and cleaner than anything other sound bars we've tried from Sony, Yamaha and JVC. The Yamaha came close, but the deep, tight bass of the Zvox is superior. It's pretty incredible that it sounds this good without a separate subwoofer. The aluminum build quality is extremely good. Although the remote is simple, we've had no issues pairing the bar with any of the TV's remotes. The Zvox remote stays mostly in the drawer unless we need to turn down the bass when watching TV in the evening while someone is trying to sleep. Make sure you give the sound bar's speakers a few hours to "break-in". Our new one sounded kind of flat for the first few hours even with the bass and treble cranked to max but really woke up just in time to watch the latest Ghostbuster's movie. We've since dialed those settings back to the default, neutral setting and it sounds perfect. The clear voice technology is great for dialog heavy shows. This is just a great all around sound bar that should be way more popular than it is.

Bit bait & switch
customer service is by email. Instalation questions take days to answer. In my opinion this is an intentional sales trick. a faulse sense of "caring" is potraed but not lived up to. Secondly their "patented technology " is no more than volume & midrange adjustments that can be done with almost any sound system with tone controls. Thirdly, their systems are lagging behind with modern technology. It will not allow control of the TV and soundbar by a single remote control. That was the real deal killer to me. Fourthly, the refund took weeks to get after they had reciept of the product being delivered back to their possession.

Voice is very harsh and pitchy
I wear hearing aids and have trouble understanding dialogue on TV. I have an awesome Dolby Atmos surround system for my main TV watching and I still have issues with voices, so I always use captions. When we bought a new TV for the bedroom, I wanted to buy a soundbar that would help me to understand dialogue so I didn't have to rely on captions so much (and TV sound is just horrid). I researched lots of soundbars and the ZVOX SB500 came out with everything I needed. I subscribe to Sound & Vision and they gave it a very high rating so I bought it. After setting it up, my initial reaction was "HUH???" The voice is very harsh and pitchy sounding and grates on my ears. Even turning down my hearing aids 2 notches didn't solve the problem. My wife has good ears and it was grating for her as well. I would like to see ZVOX incorporate a control for the sound of the voice. All the Accuvoice does is raise the volume of the voice and it becomes even more harsh. I could not listen above the 1 setting, on 6 it was unbearable. I even tried it without my hearing aids and it was intolerable. I had high hopes for this speaker but it fell flat in my expectations. I know quality sound and this speaker does not deliver. It has incredible bass, and music is mostly good, but then, any instruments in the vocal frequency range become harsh and pitchy. I don't know who's ears this was intended for, but your mileage may vary.
